How Powder Coating Can Support Your Sustainability Requirements

Manufacturers and contractors are being asked awkward questions by their own customers these days. What does the finish release into the air, and how much of it ends up as waste? UK Powder Coating Services hears these questions from clients across manufacturing and construction supply chains, and powder coating gives us some solid answers.

Where the process earns its green credentials

  • No solvents: the powder contains none, so there are no harmful VOC emissions during application or curing.

  • Powder reclaim: overspray is collected and fed back through a recycling centre, so unused powder is reused rather than thrown away.

  • Gentler pre-treatment: our cleaning and phosphate stages use environmentally friendly chemicals, followed by a rinse with demineralised water.

  • Longer life: a tougher finish means fewer recoats over the lifetime of a product, which cuts down on repeat processing and replacement parts.

The reclaim system is built into our Gema powder coating line, so it runs as part of normal production rather than as an add-on. That is a big reason waste stays low even on large batch orders. You can see where each treatment sits in the sequence on our powder coating process page.

Powder coating is not impact free. Curing ovens need heat, and any honest sustainability conversation should say so. Our conveyorised oven uses negative air seals at both the entry and exit, which keeps heat inside the oven instead of letting it escape through the openings. The continuous line also moves parts through at a steady pace, so the oven is put to work properly rather than sitting half empty.

Procurement teams increasingly ask suppliers to show how their processes affect the environment. If you are filling in questionnaires for a customer, we are happy to explain exactly how our process works so you can answer them accurately. Many of the industries we work with are under that same pressure, so you are far from alone.

Choosing powder coating services with a low waste approach will not solve every environmental question, though it removes a fair few of them.
